There is a day coming when Jesus will rule and reign over the entire earth as King. There are several things that must happen first: such as the rapture, the Great Tribulation, the Second Coming. But after these events, the day will come, and the King will rule for one thousand years.
To many, this sounds like fantasy. But according to the Bible, it is a literal reality that will take place and it will be exciting. During this time, all Christians (from the time of the first century Church to the time of the rapture) will be living in the heavenly Jerusalem and will be ruling and reigning with Jesus over the earth. The resurrected, righteous Jews will be inhabiting the earthly Jerusalem. Together the Church and the righteous Jews, under the leadership of the King of Kings, will oversee the entire earth.
“You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth“ (Revelation 5:9-10).
Seven years before the thousand-year period begins (called the millennium), every member of the Church will have received their glorified body (1 John 3:2). That simply means that their body is like the body that Jesus received when He was glorified on the day of His resurrection. Simply, the glorified body of a Christian believer will have super-human capabilities and will not be restricted by the natural laws of physics. We will be transported at the speed of thought, unrestricted by gravity, and will have the ability to de-materialize and re-materialize in another place.
Because our bodies will be glorified, we will have the abilities that Adam had before he lost the glory. Although we will not be God, we will be as He originally intended for us to be and that is to be in His likeness and image.
The Gentiles and Jews living on the earth will have natural human bodies with longevity. Evidently the Gentiles will need healing that can only be given by the leaves of the tree of life, which is in the heavenly Jerusalem that rests upon the earthly Jerusalem. Access to these leaves will only be given to those who honor Israel. Those persons and nations that do not give honor to God’s holy land will have rain withheld and will not receive the blessing (Zechariah 14:16-17).
The Bible tells us very little about the method of our rulership over the nations, but we are told that the Messiah, the King of Kings, will rule with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:15). In the millennium, He will not allow the perversion that we see in the world today.
Once I was invited to speak at a conference about end-time events. After speaking, I was told by the bishop who had invited me that he believed we are already living in the millennium and that Jesus is ruling right now. I thought to myself, “That’s impossible because Jesus would not allow the murders and depravity to exist that is in the world today.” I felt like telling him that if Jesus is ruling and reigning over the entire earth today, then He is doing a very poor job!
As Christians, we look forward to a glorious future! As we move from glory to glory, every step of the way will be more glorious than the past step. Yes, there are several things that will happen before we reach the millennium, but during this thousand years, we will be ruling and reigning with the One who loved us so much that He gave His life for us. We will have bodies that will never age nor fail, and there will be no pain or sorrow (Revelation 21:4).
I have more good news! The millennium is just one step, followed by even greater things to come in eternity. As Christians, we should be greatly encouraged. Our best days are yet to come!
